Therapy in Boulder

Welcome

Entering into counseling can be intimidating, anxiety-provoking, and relieving all at once. I commend you for starting the process of finding a therapist, as it can feel daunting when there are so many of us out there. Here’s a bit about my experience and approach to counseling, to see if we’d be a good fit.

Experience & Credentials

I have worked in a variety of different settings with all kinds of clients, including schools, psychiatric hospitals, research studies, and traditional outpatient offices, with clients as young as 5 years old to those in retirement. It is important to me to have this broad foundation of experience, while acknowledging I have so much to learn from each and every one of my clients. While I primarily work with those who struggle with mood and anxiety disorders, my experience ranges from adjustment concerns in day-to-day life to those who experience lifelong, persistent mental illness.

Approach

Counseling is scary, even for those of us who have been in it multiple times in our life, before. The concept of walking into a room and spending 50 minutes talking about ourselves often feels unnatural and one-sided. My goal as your therapist is to make you feel as comfortable as possible while we work to understand parts of your life and experience that you sense need improvement. First and foremost, my role here is to go where you go - childhood, career, relationships, trauma, and behavioral patterns are a few examples. Wherever you go during those 50 minutes, I will follow, while asking clarifying questions and providing a fresh perspective. I also work to challenge my clients, gently pushing them to trust themselves, believe in themselves, and honor their past while creating a future they are excited about. Ultimately, I believe a person’s past experiences directly impact their future thoughts and behaviors, and as a result, their future experiences. I think it’s important to talk through this and understand why you behave the way you do, why you value what is important to you, and why you see patterns in the way you respond in difficult situations.

I believe no progress can be made if I am not my genuine self with you, and vice versa. That said, I rely heavily on humor in session, when appropriate. I believe humor can bring us together and allow us to quickly form a bond which lends itself to honesty and growth. More so, I have benefitted from counselors in the past who allow themselves to be less structured and a bit more go-with-the-flow. If this aligns with what you’re looking for, please reach out - I want to talk with you!

A bit about my personal life, since you’ll be sharing so much with me! I was born in Washington state but my family quickly moved to Colorado, and I was raised here since I was 4 years old, in a suburb of Boulder. I initially went to the University of Idaho for my undergraduate degree before transferring to CU Boulder. I received my master’s degree from the University of Denver. I have pets at home who keep me on my toes. I love the change of seasons here in Colorado, and enjoy exploring new places whenever I can with the people I love. I’m incredibly passionate about the work I do, because I’m lucky enough to see the results week to-week in my clients.
